Karl Lagerfeld: Career in Pictures

“Don’t overact the story of your name. Overact the story of your work.”
– Karl Lagerfeld

A few days ago, the world lost a fashion designer who marked the 20th and 21st century, Karl Lagerfeld. One of the most influential fashion designers and figures of today. Vitae Moderna is remembering Karl through his extraordinary career and talent.

In 1955, Karl won competition sponsored by the International Wool Secretariat and befriended Yves Saint Laurent, and was soon after hired by Pierre Balmain. He worked as Balmain’s assistant for three years.
In 1958, he became the artistic director for Jean Patou.
His first collection was shown in a two-hour presentation in July 1958, but he used the name Roland Karl, rather than Karl Lagerfeld.
Lagerfeld was hired by Fendi in 1967 to modernize their fur line. His extraordinary work , designs and introducing the use of mole, rabbit made him stay in Fendi until his death.
When Chanel was considered as “near-dead brand” (in the 1980s) Karl “saved” the brand and made a huge success by renewing its ready-to-wear fashion line. Karl’s muses were extraordinary women who certainly leave a great impression, starting from Vanessa Paradis, Cara Delevingne, Linda Evangelista and many other.
In 1984, he began his own “Karl Lagerfeld” brand. He was the creative director of his own namesake fashion house, which combines Parisian-inspired styles with an effortless, rock-chic ease. Its wide breadth of covetable lifestyle collections includes — amongst others — women’s and men’s ready-to-wear and accessories.
